Jaycee Update: Bone fragment is human

Authorities say a bone fragment discovered while searching the Antioch home of a couple accused of kidnapping and raping Jaycee Lee Dugard is human.A spokesman for the Contra Costa Sheriff's Office say they are seeking help from the state to perform DNA testing on the fragment. Authorities are keeping mum on the possible connection the fragment may have to the kidnapping suspect, but they have previously ruled out any connection to a series of prostitute murders in the Bay Area.Meanwhile, a 16-page criminal complaint filed by the El Dorado County District Attorney's office alleges the wife of an accused kidnapper actively participated in raping 11-year-old Jaycee.As Phillip Garrido, 58, and Nancy Garrido, 54, were lead into the courtroom in Placerville, law enforcement officials were combing through the Garrido's backyard compound in Antioch where they allegedly held Jaycee, and repeatedly raped her, for 18 years. The couple has pleaded not guilty to 29 felony counts of kidnapping, rape, sexual assault and false imprisonment.Law enforcement officials expanded their search to include property neighboring Garrido's home. According to officials with the Contra Costa Sheriff's Office, Garrido served as a caretaker for the property when it sat vacant three years ago and he may have used one of the sheds as a second home.Investigators brought in cadaver-sniffing dogs and shovels to search the property. The current homeowner is not a suspect in any criminal activity, according to authorities.Earlier reports indicate authorities are looking for links between the disappearance of a number of Bay Area women and Garrido, something they have now ruled out. But speculation, reported by other newspapers and other news gathering organizations, indicate Garrido may be a suspect in the disappearance of other young girls in the Bay Area.Dugard was kidnapped at a bus stop near her home in South Lake Tahoe on June 10, 1991, and wasn't found until Garrido allegedly brought her and two children he fathered with the victim into a police station in Concord, according to authorities.On Friday, they were brought into the courtroom, both wearing red jumpsuits and bound in shackles. Nancy kept her head down, appearing to weep during portions of the short proceeding. She was seated next to her court-appointed attorney.Phillip stared ahead, sitting behind and a few seats away from his wife, speaking in whispers to his court-appointed attorney.Neighbors of Phillip Garrido say children knew him as "Creepy Phil" and he claimed he could "speak to God" as well as control minds, according to published reports.He is a convicted sex offender, having been sentenced in 1977 to 50 years for the kidnapping and rape of a South Lake Tahoe woman the year before. He was released from federal prison in 1988. Jaycee was abducted just three years later and apparently lived the last 18 years as a virtual prisoner 170 miles away in Antioch.She was held in sheds, outbuildings and tents, trash littering the area. One of the buildings was soundproof and could lock from the outside, according to a spokesman for the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office.Jaycee had her first child with Garrido when she was 14, according to authorities.Neither of her children, now ages 11 and 15, have been to school or seen a doctor."They were kept in complete isolation in this compound, if you will," said El Dorado County Undersheriff Fred Kollar.Jaycee's stepfather, Carl Probyn, has been a suspect since her disappearance."It broke my marriage up. I've gone through hell," Probyn told The Associated Press at his home in Orange. "It's a total shock after 18 years."According to Probyn, Jaycee visited with her mother, Terry, just days after the Garridos were arrested and expressed regret for not finding a way to escape.Probyn said the two daughters, Starlet and Angel, are "fragile."
