Folsom Magic captures Wesco Apple Classic

On Sunday September 25, the Folsom Magic under-12 girls' soccer team captured first place at the Wesco Apple Classic. More than half of the Magic team are new select players this year and the team has developed together well. The week before the tournament, emphasis at practice was on defense and defense is what won the Wesco Apple Classic. The Magic only allowed one goal in four games.Kathleen Menz and Alexis Reinbolt supplied strong goaltending, while defenders Kristen Anderson, Elaine Halverson, Paige Harrison, Marisa Miller and Chelsea Obrachta played together.The Magic opened the tournament with a 1-0 win over the Roseville Perfect Gift, with Shannon Duck providing the goal. Folsom tied its next game with the Gold Country United Strikers, 1-1. Lia Sbisa scored for the Magic with the assist going to Remy Goc.A 3-0 win over Mill Valley, with two goals by Sarah Ringler, lifted the Magic into the championship game against the Wesco Goal Sisters. After a scoreless first half, Duck and Ali Smith scored for the Magic, giving them a 2-0 win.Emily Brigman (striker) and Ashley Kroger (midfielder) played new positions during the tournament and made solid contributions to the team. The Magic outscored their opponents 7-1 throughout the tournament. Folsom Thunder earns second-place medalThe Folsom Thunder under-16 boys' soccer team took second place at the ARYSL Goal Rush Tournament held September 24-25 at the Cherry Island complex. After cruising comfortably through the first three matches in their flight with winning scores of 4-0, 4-0, and 6-0, the Thunder met determined opposition in the championship round. Pitted against the Redding Raiders in the final round, the Thunder had difficulty penetrating a tough defense, as they played to a 0-0 tie at the end of the first period. That score held through most of the second period until Redding scored a header goal late in the period to break the tie and win the trophy. Tournament scoring for the Thunder came from Mark Callaghan (2), Phillip Ryder (6), Brian Wallace (3), Brian Cox (1), and Kyle Stanfield (2) with assists from Sam Nickel and Stanfield (3). Danny Williams, Brian Busath, Tommy Fay, Nickel and Kyle Lackner provided offensive support to allow the Thunder to dominate all but the final game. Stiff defense from Spencer Strombeck, Bryce Verona, Justin Borghesi, Eric Hahn, Joel Stevens, Cox, Nick Hernandez and Callaghan held the opposition to a single goal for the entire tournament. Nathan Oliveira and Tucker Smith split duties in goal. Flame wins Goal Rush ClassicThe Folsom Flame won the Goal Rush Classic held Sept. 24-25.The Flame opened the tournament with a 5-2 win over the Orangevale United. Tanya Skupnjak scored two goals, while Natalie Lehman, Alisse Schmitt and Sandy Hanania also scored goals.Kirsten Forsberg scored Folsom's only goal in a 1-0 win over the Sunrise Clash. Folsom then defeated the Rocklin Angels by the same 1-0 score with Schmitt providing the goal.In the championship game, Folsom won its third game of the weekend by a 1-0 score, this time against the Loomis Reign, thanks to a strong team defensive effort and a goal by Samantha Simi. Goaltender Shelley Hanavan led the defensive effort by having no goals scored on her throughout the tournament.
