It took 168 years for this to happen in Placer County

New Placer County Supervisor Bonnie Gore made it two women on the Board of Supervisors when she was sworn in Tuesday. Joining Supervisor Jennifer Montgomery, Gore's oath of office represents the first time since the county was formed from portions of Sutter and Yuba counties in April 1851 that two women have served on the Placer County panel. Lone women on the board have been a regular occurrence since 1977, when Auburn's Theresa Cook took her seat as supervisor. Cook served through 1988. Others to follow in Cook's groundbreaking footsteps were Granite Bay's Susan Hogg, who was on the board from 1989 to 1992, and North Auburn's Harriet White, who served from 1997 to 2004. Gore comes to the county after being a member of the Roseville City Council from 2012 to 2018. She defeated incumbent Jack Duran in the June primary for the District 1 seat, which takes in the city of Roseville. When outgoing Placer board chairman Jim Holmes suggested that the presence of two women on the panel would hopefully kindle a "kindler, gentler" board, Gore rejoindered that she's looking forward to a kinder board that would be "tenacious as well." In her opening remarks, Gore stressed a resolve to keep a sharp eye on the county bottom line. "I am committed to continuing to maintain the county's fiscal sustainability and to ensure Placer County remains a wonderful place to live, work and do business," Gore said. Montgomery said she was "delighted" to have a second woman on the board with her. "It's amazing to think it took until 2019," she said. And Montgomery pointed out that three women were on the dias Tuesday, with recently appointed interim county counsel Karin Schwab sitting beside Holmes.
