Shooting, stabbing incident rocks tiny town of Colfax

It could have been a scene from a box-office, chart-topping movie, but the bizarre chain of events, including a shooting, stabbing and hit and run, was all too real for Placer County deputies.Paul M. Johnson, 52, of Colfax, was taken into custody Monday on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and hit and run stemming from the Saturday night incident in Colfax in which one woman was stabbed and a man shot.Lt. George Malim of the Placer County Sheriff's Department said Monday that around 7:50 p.m. deputies responded to a home in the 400 block of Secret Town Lane in Colfax after a reported shooting.There they found Christopher Stevenson, 20, of Rancho Cordova, bleeding from a "minor" gunshot wound to his leg.Although the investigation into the events continues, officials said it appears that Johnson drove his ex-girlfriend, Shelley Minniear, 31, of Colfax to Minniear's friend's apartment on Colfax Street where her current boyfriend, Christopher Corin, 44, of Colfax, was waiting for her."Corin confronted Johnson and an argument ensued," Malim said. "Corin apparently tried to stab Johnson with a knife and Johnson then took off in his truck, possibly hitting Corin."In the process of trying to get away, Johnson struck a parked truck.Stevenson and his friend, Heath Snyder, 21, of Auburn, witnessed the argument between Corin and Johnson and saw Corin fall to the ground as Johnson sped away.Stevenson and Snyder then chased after Johnson onto Eastbound Interstate 80, following him to the home on secret Town Lane. This is where Stevenson was shot in the leg, officials said.Meanwhile, back on Colfax Street, Minniear and Corin argued and Corin allegedly stabbed Minniear in the hand. The pair returned to their apartment in the 500 block of Pinetop Circle in Colfax where Corin's 17-year-old son became involved in a physical fight in which Minniear apparently bit him on the chest. She then fled back to her friend's apartment on Colfax Street.In the end, Stevenson, Corin and his unnamed son were treated at Sutter-Auburn Faith Hospital and released. Johnson was booked into Placer County Jail on charges of suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and hit and run. He remains in custody on $75,000 bail.
